On March 4, 1997 when I was 17 my world was shattered. I was involed in a MVA and that's when I
got my TBI. That wasn't the only injury from the accident, but it was the most serious.
I was airlifted the accident by DART (Dartmouth Air Rescue Team) and transported to DHMC (Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center). I was in critical condition was admitted to PICU (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit) and later moved to the regular childrens unit.
After 2 weeks of being at DHMC I was moved to a re-habilitaion hospital in Concord, NH. I don't
remember much of being at either hospital, except that my mother was always with me and my dad came
down for weekends to visit me.
After about 5 weeks in re-hab I was able to go home. I wanted to go back to school and see my friends, I was in a hurry to get my "old" life back. I stayed home for 1 week and then started back to school for a few hours a day. I only took the classes I would need to graduate (I had a lot of catching up to do!!)
My junior year ended and I still a class to finish, a tutor was hired for the summer and with alot of hard work I was able to finish my junior year about 2 months into my senior year.
As my senior year was coming to an end my friends were starting to get letters from the colleges that they had applied too. I didn't apply to any, I didn't feel that I would be "smart" enough to go to college. With encouragement from my family and teachers from my high school I felt that I should apply to at least 2 colleges. First I was
accepted to my second choice college and later on I was accepted to my first choice college!! I
immediately started making plans and arrangements to head off to college.
My 1st year was a success, and I only had one more year to go, I knew that I could do it!! Nothing was stopping me now! On May 26, 2000 I graduated NHTI and now work full time as a Dental Assistant.
What I want you to get out of this story is that you should NEVER give up!! Nothing can stop you
from doing what you really want to do. You live each day like it's both your first and last,
charrish every moment and don't forget to tell the people you care about how you feel about them, you
never know if that'll be the last time you see them. I also have my story posted and would love to have
you read it!! Have a nice day! :)
